How to Earn a Darn Good Living as a Writer.

If you can write a letter to a friend, you can earn a darn good living as a writer. Really, you can, because writing is a superpower.

There’s a lot you can do with your superpower, but for now, I’ll show you how to make money with it. Actually, I’ll show you the easiest, most straight forward and ethical way to make money as a writer.

…help people make money online.

First, let me explain why I said, if you can write a letter to a friend, you can earn a darn good living as a writer. You see, the most effective writing is writing that is honest and sincere, like a letter to friend. If you can do that, you can earn a darn good living.

First a word of warning…

Before I show you how, I feel obligated to first warn you about ways your superpower can be exploited by others.

For example, take the online content mills. You know what I mean, the places where webmasters go to get articles to feed the internet’s insatiable appetite for content. Sure, you can make money there and, if you’re really good at living on a budget, maybe, eventually, earn enough to live on.

The problem with these sites is you must bid against other writers. Some of those other writers live in Thailand or the Philippines or some other place where $20 a day is big money. But, if you live in Europe, Canada or the States, twenty bucks ain’t much.

With content mills, there’s a constant and relentless downward pressure on what you can earn. Writing for the content mills might be okay for a temporary influx of cash, but you’re better than that.

The truth about being a copywriter…

Reality CheckMaybe you thought about being a copywriter. There are several high-dollar courses online that will teach you that, but then you’d have to go through the training and find clients. That could take months or years. I know, I’ve taken those high-dollar courses, chased after clients and written ad copy. It’s not easy money, not by a long shot.

Besides, do you know what those high-dollar copywriting courses are going to teach you? The first thing you’ll learn is that the first rule of copywriting is “Be gentle, be kind.” You’ve already got that because you know how to write a letter to a friend.

Then they’ll teach you that it’s a lot easier when you’re writing copy for a quality product you like. No kidding. And they’ll teach you that you need to find the people who want that product. It’s not rocket science.

But here’s what happens after you’ve spent hundreds, if not thousands, on those high-dollar copywriting courses and get into the copywriting business. The people who want to be your clients do not have quality products you like. In fact, they’re selling junk on the internet and they want you to use your superpower to persuade people to give them money for their junk.

Sure, you could do that. Just write a sales letter as if you were writing a letter to a friend and pretend that their junk is a gift from Heaven that will cure their pain, give them a sexy body, get them a hot lover and make them rich by Friday.

That’s a good way to get an ulcer. Plus, the karma payback could be horrendous.

Not to mention that when you write ad copy, you only get paid once for what you write. Yep, just once. You’ll also have to deal with the stress of deadlines, negotiating contracts and hassling clients until they pay up.

Remember, every client is your boss and you’ll need several clients to earn a decent living. That’s like having several bosses. Everyone wants a piece of you and it only takes one bad client to make your life a living nightmare.

There’s an easier way…

There’s a better way, an easier way and a far more lucrative way to use your superpower.

But before I get into that, here’s another little tidbit I learned from copywriting. The most valuable asset on the internet is trust.

In fact, people tend to buy from people who they know, like and trust. There’s that word again, trust.

The second most valuable asset on the internet is original content. You’re a writer. You’re a goldmine of original content! Why sell yourself for peanuts when you have the power to create wealth with words?

Back to writing a letter to a friend.

It all comes full circle, doesn’t it? We’re back to writing a letter to a friend, aren’t we? Friendship is built on trust. In fact, every relationship is built on trust. If you don’t have trust, you don’t have a relationship.

In other words, it takes integrity. That’s the secret to how you’re going to earn a darn good living as a writer.

Lamp, typewriter, and John Levanen

Let’s recap:

  1. You have a superpower. You can write.
  2. You’re a decent human being* who has integrity and values trust.
  3. The internet has an insatiable appetite for content.
  4. There are billions of people online searching for stuff to buy.
  5. People buy from people they know, like and trust.

*If in doubt, see the Decent Human Being Quiz at the bottom of this page.

Just a suggestion…

Why not use your superpower to write content for your own website so millions of people can get to know you, like you, trust you and buy your stuff?

You don’t need your own stuff to sell either, you can be an affiliate and sell other people’s stuff.

It’s a big online world out there and getting bigger by the minute. People are spending billions online every day. You only need a very small part of that to do very, very well.

In other words, why not build an authority website, fill it with friendly, high-quality, useful content that attracts people who are interested in the things you like to write about and then sell them quality products that will enrich their life?

It’s so much easier to make money this way.

Where to begin…

By now, you might be wondering where you can learn to do all that. I’ll tell you.

I’m a member of a community of people who have online businesses. It’s sort of an open education project.

    Hi Gary,
What a great article! I had never thought to compare writing on the internet to writing a letter to a friend, but it makes perfect sense. You are honest and open with your friends and they trust you, so writing in this manner should surely inspire trust from your audience.
Thank you for this great tip, I think it will help me a lot with my own writing.
Oh, and the answer – Do unto others…

    • Hi Kerry!

Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words. I’m glad my post was of help. And congrats on passing the Decent Human Being test. That reminds me of a quote I read in a John Lecarre novel years ago, he said, “Sometimes it takes extraordinary courage just to be a decent human being.” Over the years I’ve found this to be true.

      All the best…

  3. Really great post.I like how you busted other ideas before explaining the method of Wealthy Affiliate. It does make it seem like the making sense option in terms of online earnings and potential. You have a great way with words and you really engage with the reader to keep them at it. I honestly couldn’t stop reading and I usually try to skim read.

    • Hi Matt!

Thank you for your kind words. I’m pleased you found my article engaging. It’s always a special victory when I can snag a skimmer and pull them in.

      All the best…

  4. Hello, I like your article because it is inspiring and infectious. You give hope for people who knew that they have a gift of writing, but they did not know where it use.
As you mentioned, maybe they had bad experience with websites, where payment was low.
Your mentioned training platform is best place where people can learn, earn and navigate successful business online. To provide rich content is not so easy. Not everybody knows how to do it. Here, in this company everybody can learn from other members how to present themselves, how to describe products or offer services.
I wish that your visitors would join this wonderful company and would enjoy results, which would lead to reaching their goals.
All the best, happy writing, Nemira.

    • Hi Nemira!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I agree, our community is really something special.

  5. Hi Gary!
What a great way to promote WA! Very creative. Your site is easy on the eyes and easy to navigate. You encourage me to continue writing as I never thought of myself as a “writer”. But now, here I am writing a blog! I will have to come back and visit for more tips and encouragement! Here’s to your success!

    • Hi Jenny!
Thanks for stopping by and for your kind, encouraging words. Writers definitely have an advantage making money online. In my experience, the people who struggle the most to make money online are the ones who have poor writing skills. Naturally, if they stick with it their writing will improve, but unfortunately they usually quit before that time.
      All the best…

  6. Hi Gary,
I also tried to make money writing on the internet. I found a company that would pay you to write content for the webpages of other companies. It was long hours and very little money. I am glad to see that there is another way to make some money and possibly be your own boss while writing. I hope that you are enjoying being a part of your online community of fellow writers.

    • Hi Jessica!

I’ve written content for other people’s blogs and hated it. I tend to pour my heart and soul into my writing, and polish obsessively. The pay was pathetic and the stress was very high for me too. Also, I don’t like non-writers telling me how to write. Thanks to the internet, it’s easier and more lucrative to have your own authority blog, plus you get to write what you want to write and don’t have to deal with bosses. Yes, I dearly love my online community. When I found it, I felt like I’m come home.

      All the best…

  7. Hi Gary,
I really enjoyed your post. I was not aware that people could still be copywriters in this day and age and to pay for it sounds crazy. Do you think the money you put into Wealthy Affiliate is giving you a better quality training than the one you received for copywriting? Thanks for sharing your story.

    • Hi Jessica!

Thanks for stopping by. You asked a good question.

By far there is more value in the Wealthy Affiliate training. They actually teach copywriting fundamentals but don’t call it that. A big difference between the copywriting training I went through and how it is taught by Wealthy Affiliate is that Wealthy Affiliate emphasizes the importance of integrity and to avoid hype.

The copywriting training I went through pushes hype to the limits of credibility. Those methods were profitable in the past with direct-mail campaigns, but in the age of the internet where reputation matters, hype is lethal, not to mention just plain unethical.

If someone enjoys writing I would highly recommend they by-pass copywriting and go straight to Wealthy Affiliate. There are far less headaches going that route and the rewards are truly unlimited.

      All the best…

  8. A well written article by a fellow writer. I to have written articles and ebooks and there is a lot of money to be made on the internet through the power of writing. Wealthy Affiliate is definitely the best place to start if you want to make additional income or even a full time income in this business. Thanks for the article.

    • Hi James!

Thanks for stopping by. I agree, Wealthy Affiliate is definitely the best place to start if someone whats to make money online. When I joined, I felt like I had finally come home.

      All the best…

  9. I loved this post! 🙂 I’m a member of the Wealthy Affiliate community and can certainly vouch for everything you have said here Gary. That’s really all it does take with time and consistent effort. When I read your golden rule quiz I immediately thought of Aladdin, when Jafar says reason #1. 🙂
Question: would you say that it’s better for a writer to make a living online through a platform like WA or opting for online jobs through eLance and the like?

    • Hi Sarah!

Thanks for stopping by. You ask a good question.

In my experience, writing for the likes of eLance will earn money but you will always be trading your time for money. If you build an authority website the way Wealthy Affiliate teaches, you will be building a money generating asset that in time will free you from ever having a boss.

Writing for eLance will bring in money rather quickly but it will never be much of an income. Building an authority website takes months before it earns anything at all and at first the income will probably be quite meager. However, in time the income can be substantial.

      All the best…

  10. I appreciated your analysis of writing for content mills and copywriting, as well as your emphasis on integrity and writing high-quality, useful content. Wealthy Affiliate’s “open education project” is absolutely amazing — so many great teachers paying it forward by freely sharing their expertise and encouragement! You’ve been blessed with a great superpower in your writing style too!

    • Hi David!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your kind words and share your enthusiasm for Wealthy Affiliate. It has truly changed my life.

      All the best…

  11. David Dwyer says:

This seems to me like a much classier version of the typical hype up pages one sees for fitness and investment coaches. Customized for your niche and toned back so as to be a friendlier, more relaxed way of drawing people into the “sale”.
I think it is well done and and clean.

  12. christian wijaya says:

HI Gary, I really love you content, for me, it is easy to follow. Have you ever tried making money writing on the internet before? Do you have another tips how to write with No grammatical error, especially for a person who is living in a not english speaking country. Can they also be writer and make money? Ithanks

    • Hi Christian!

Thanks for stopping by. Blogging is new for me, but I have been writing professionally since the mid 1980’s.

Yes, you absolutely can make money writing, even if English is not your native language. Just be prepared that will take a little longer. I’m convinced that the best opportunity for writers today is blogging the way Wealthy Affiliate teaches.

Regarding your question about writing without grammatical errors…Two tools can eliminate 99% of all grammatical errors: 1.) Use a word processing program like MS Word or Open Office (free) and the book “The Elements of Style” by William Strunk Jr. and E.B White. That little reference book will improve anyone’s writing tremendously. It gets updated all the time so get the most recent edition you can find.

      All the best…

  13. donnacaliegh says:

Hi Gary! I agree that trust and integrity are HUGE! Like you said, there are a lot of people out there getting paid and are under tremendous pressure to lie and that’s how they go about trying to make a living. That’s why I am super glad that I have joined the WA community that you have mentioned here. It is really great to have a group of people trying to earn a living by helping others and each other HONESTLY. I have learned a lot by being a part of it and I really appreciate the members such as yourselves being as helpful as you are. It truly is a great community that teaches people the ins and outs of making a living online in a way they can be proud of and unlike some of those expensive programs that promise to make you financially free but end up not really teaching you anything, this one didn’t end up putting me in the hole and actually teaches me something new every day. Great article here and I wish you continued success!

    • Hi Donna!

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for your kind words.

Like you mentioned, as a copywriter working online, it’s easy to cross the line into unethical behavior. There is always a price to pay for lying, even if not one ever knows.

You are so right about Wealthy Affiliate. It has truly changed my life in so many wonderful ways. In addition to learning the right way to make money online, Wealthy Affiliate is such an amazing community. Writing and online marketing can be lonely occupations, but not if you’re a member of Wealthy Affiliate. When I found Wealthy Affiliate, I felt like I had come home.

      All the best…

  14. First i wanna say that i really enjoyed reading your post. It really seems that you know what you are talking about. How long have you been doing this, and when did you decide to join Wealthy Affiliate? I really like the way your site is build up. It is clear, and the content is easy to read and not hard to understand.

    • Hi Tony!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your comments.

I’ve been with Wealthy Affiliate about 7 months. Thanks too for your compliments about my site. I recently reorganized it to make it easier to read.

      All the best…

  15. Hi,

I like to write little articles but I have no place for them to publish. Are there any tips on how to make a website too? I have no idea about HTML or code writing. Do I need to learn all that first? Sounds like a hard task to complete.

    Thanks in advance,

    • Hi Vincent!

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for your great questions. As a member of our Wealthy Affiliate community you will not need to write code. Most of the technical stuff is automated. The training is baby step by baby step.

Building a website takes only a few clicks of the mouse.

If you like to write little articles you’ll do very well with a blog. That is essentially the business model you start with at Wealthy Affiliate. You can publish your articles on your blog where they will draw visitors to your site. In the Wealthy Affiliate training, you’ll learn how to market to the people who visit your site.

Because you like to write, you have a tremendous advantage, just remember to be patient because building a real business takes time. Join Wealthy Affiliate for free and get started.

      Thanks for your terrific questions.

      All the best…

  16. If you really think about it. The Internet and the media are full of copywriters lying and trying to convince you how great their product is. For me, research is important. Wealthy Affiliate is a very trustworthy site that will teach you how to create quality articles that millions of people are researching for. You simply have much more freedom and you have the ability to build your own business and take control of your earnings. I’ve been a Wealthy Affiliate member for four months now and the experience is just amazing. Many secrets are taught and you will be equipped with the proper tools in order to succeed.

    Great post Gary!

    • Hi Bradyn!

Thanks for stopping by. Yes, you are so right. The internet and media in all its forms is full of copywriters trying to turn your money into their money. Not all copywriters are like this, but too many are.

Since joining Wealthy Affiliate, I’ve had the opportunity to use my writing skills to help people solve problems. It’s been very rewarding on all levels.

      All the best…

  17. Hi Gary,
Very creative piece of work, live your visual selection and the way you build your content, keep up the good work. Did not know that the copy writing industry was so tough out there. At one point in my life, in my younger years I wanted to be a Writer/Journalist but I did not follow my dreams never have the resources did not fight hard enough.I am a lousy writer must admit but since I joined the Wealthy Affiliate family I am learning.Having challenges with my content building.Sometimes I don’t know what to say and how to start. In the process of building my website.Could you view my work and give me your honest feedback?

    • Hi Tessa!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate that you took the time to comment.

I visited your site, . Tessa, you are a good writer. Don’t think for a minute that you are a lousy writer, because you’re not. You express yourself well and your writing is engaging.

I did notice that sometimes when you end a sentence with a period you go right into the next sentence. There should always be a space after a period when you end a sentence.

I wrote a post about writing tips you can read here: Writing Tips.

Also, I recommend you buy a copy of The Elements of Style by William Strunk and E.B. White. This is a slender book, but if you follow it’s advice your writing will improve dramatically. Plus, I’m always happy to answer your questions.

Thanks again for stopping by. I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to respond your comment, but apparently it was captured in the spam filter.

      All the best…

  18. Hi Gary,

I love your article! It’s so easy to read and you really know what you are talking about! I like the humour and the honesty and I look forward to reading more articles from you. I was thinking of looking in to copywriting.. but I think I’ll give it a miss now!!

    • Hi Sammi!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your kind words and glad your found my post helpful.

      All the best…

  19. Hi Gary!

You did a tremendous and inspiring job in showing people how they can earn an honest living by becoming a good content article writer. Best off, you showed your visitors that it is not necessary to go to some academic institution trained to be a copywriter or work for some content mill where you’re but a single face in a sea of thousands.

Instead you do a great job in instructing to your readers that right here at WA, they would be provided the training in knowing how to write effective content articles, in a niche in which they are passion about and therefore have the knowledge, and also most importantly to simply write as though they were talking to a friend.

Having written academic articles for post graduate classes myself years ago when studying for my Masters’ degree, I fully understand that that type of writing is truly unnecessary for the job of article content writing.

With an influx of individuals now having short attention spans no one is going to read a doctoral dissertation type of article promoting a product.

You did a great job stating that really if one puts his/her head down everyone truly has the ability to write effective content in today’s online promoting business world.

Great job sir and again you did a thorough job in also explaining the benefits of joining WA. It truly is the best place on the Internet to allow one to receive the training education, tools and community support from other WA members, and build a successful online business for him/herself!

A pleasure reading your article, Gary!

    • Hi Jeff!

Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I’m pleased you enjoyed my post. I actually had to unlearn how I had been taught to write in college.

You are so right about the short attention spans we now must consider. This is one reason I’ll soon be adding video to my posts.

There simply isn’t anything like Wealthy Affiliate out there. When I stumbled onto to it, I felt as if I had come home. It truly is a pleasure to introduce people to Wealthy Affiliate where they can change their life for the better while building a profitable online business they can be proud of.

      All the best…

  20. Andres Santos says:

Nice article. I agree with you 100%. Building your own website and writing for yourself is the best way to go. It might take a while, but if you stick with it, it will pay off. Wealthy Affiliate sounds like a good place to start doing that. The step by step training and the support you get from the staff and community is like none other.

    • Hi Andres!

Thanks for stopping by and taking a moment to comment. I wish the internet and Wealthy Affiliate had been around when I started out in the mid 80’s.

Combining even a modest writing ability with an authority blog like Wealthy Affiliate teaches is an incredibly powerful business model. Yes, it takes sustained effort, every real business does, but this method is a true income maker that fits any schedule, can be done from anywhere there is an internet connection and without a boss in sight!

  21. Nice flow of information Gary. You come across as a very personable individual. I like that you are saying the opportunity you are promoting will take some hard work. I have fallen foul of false promises online a few times. If something says it will take hard work then I am more inclined to believe it now.

    • Hi Rob!

Thanks for taking time to comment. I appreciate your encouraging words. Like you, I’ve “fallen foul of false promises online” too. Trying to find honest to goodness useful information about making money online is like tip-toeing through a mine field. One false move and you’re robbed blind.

For me, the turning point was when I realized that building a profitable online business takes time and effort, and follows the same rules of building a successful off-line business, that is, offer value, solve people’s problems and create relationships with your customers.

Relationships are built on trust and trust is built on integrity.

The online business world is one place where being a good guy pays off long term. Sure, in the short term, it might look like the scammers are winning, but they have to constantly prop up their scams with lies and more lies.

Scammers are dysfunctional human beings. They are incapable of being honest and wouldn’t recognize integrity if they tripped over it. Scamming is all those sorts of people are capable of doing. The problem is they’re danger to everyone online.

This is why I’m so grateful to have found my online community, Wealthy Affiliate.

  22. Tasos Perte Tzortzis says:

Hello Gary , nice thoughts and I agree with all of your points.I am fan of websites myself and I do not rely on other websites to bid with other writers and I don’t want to write content for clients.

I want to create something personal and invite people to read my work.I love blogging and most of all I enjoy the interaction with visitors and the comments.

Have you ever thought of publishing a product that you own besides the affiliate offers?..Like an e-book or a course?

Very good recommendation on Wealthy Affiliate , such a tremendous place to get started online the right way.

    • Hi Tasos Perte Tzortzis!

Thanks for stopping by. Yes, like you, I love that I have direct contact with my readers.

Funny you should ask if I had thought about publishing my own product. I just finished writing a course on How to Write a Novel. I’m not selling this course. It’s free and available here.

I never hesitate to recommend Wealthy Affiliate. It’s a wonderful community where anyone can learn how to ethically make money online. Writers have a tremendous advantage when it comes to building an online business because content is essential.

      All the best…

  23. Wow! Let me just say that whatever you are selling I am buying! LOL! This article is great and to make even better you follow your own rules, you give people hope, you give people faith in themselves and you let people know that they can trust you. As you pointed out all amazing and important things. You make people see something in themselves that they may not even have known that they had.
This is a great article with amazing grammar, content and structure.
Thank you for letting me read your work!

    • Hi Envilzard!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your kind words and I’m glad you enjoyed the article. Writing truly is a superpower. You just have to know how to focus it and that is what I hope to give people.

Thanks so much for taking time to comment.

  24. I have to rewrite my comment again because this site recognized my first comment as SPAM and so auto deleted it (so frustrating).
I’m just like Batman. No superpowers but everyone thinks I’m a super hero. Thanks for such a well written article on being a creator of original content and it’s importance. Really well done!

    • Hi Peter!

Good to see you here again. I’m sorry your earlier comment got attacked by the spam filter. I’m using a new spam filter and it’s still in the trial phase. I’m glad you enjoyed the article and I appreciate that you took time to comment.

Nice article! I always wanted to become a writer when I was a kid, and I was always told that I have a knack at it. However, as a kid I never knew there were opportunities out there to write unless you were willing to write a book. Very informative article!

    • Hi AngelicaManey!

Thanks so much for stopping by. There are indeed many opportunities to earn money as a writer. Oddly, writing a book is usually the least profitable.

It takes time to build a copywriting business and now most clients want a copywriter to also have extensive knowledge of internet marketing. This is why I recommend a writer to join our community of copywriters, bloggers and marketers to learn how it’s done.

      Thanks again for stopping by.

      All the best…

  26. i really enjoyed your page. the approach is unique and very true. i was drawn to this form of work based on a desire to write and make money. well the market is right in front of us now a days. my question for you is how many people have you had join? by the way i am a premium member of wealthy affiliate and wholeheartedly endorse the service. join for free.

    • Hi Darren!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your encouragement.

Good to hear you’re a premium member of Wealthy Affiliate. When I joined, I felt like I had finally found my online home.

  27. Hi there Gary,

Writing isn’t something I thought I would do in the latter part of my career, but I guess I found a lot of comfort in expressing my own thoughts and feelings into words. Something we don’t get to do very often in our hectic world.

I started out blogging with zero experience, but thanks to the community at Wealthy Affiliate, I became better at organizing my thoughts and delivering the message to my readers.

Blogging for a living is slowly becoming a reality for me and I look forward to doing it full time soon.

    • Hi Cathy!

Thanks so much for visiting and leaving a comment. Wealthy Affiliate has been a true blessing for me and I’m grateful to have found it.

It’s good to know you started with “zero experience,” but are still able to build a successful blog. Yes, it does take time. That’s the reality of any endeavor that’s worth the effort. Fortunately, Wealthy Affiliate has step-by-step training that keeps you focused on the tasks that matter, so there’s the less wasted effort.

      All the best…

  28. Chasing down clients is definitely not easy, I agree with you there! And it gets so frustrating when you work your butt off to complete a project on time and to the best of your ability only to have to chase after the client again to get paid. I love this article! I never thought about writing to a friend as a precursor to online writing. But, you bring up a valid point that you have to establish trust with readers. Wealthy Affiliate is definitely a great group of people! I absolutely love it!

    • Hi Jess!

Thanks for stopping by. I’m glad you like my article. People who don’t write can’t understand how exhausting it can be. I love it, but by the end of the day my brain is used.

      All the best…

  29. aishahomemadecupcakerecipes says:

VERY attractive title. You’re absolutely right about content mills! Love the humorous, down to earth, ‘friend-like’ tone of the article. Kept me very engaged and read it right up till the end. Half tempted to take the Decent Human Being quiz hehe.

The way you tied in WA is very very good, as trust, community and friendship are at the core, and that is exactly the way you’d want to connect with your readers if you have your own website! Keep up the great work.

    • Hi!

Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment. Thanks too for your kind words. How’d you do on the Decent Human Being Quiz?

      All the best…

  30. This is a great article!

I’ve considered writing for others but didn’t think my content was good enough nor my writing skills!

So, are there any companies you could recommend to sell your writing to? I completely get the whole writing your own website idea, but if you wanted to help with the costs, it could be beneficial to write for others also?

    • Hi Sammi!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your comment.

I’m sure your writing skills are good enough to write for others. Confidence seems to always lag behind our abilities, but you certainly have the ability.

If you want to write for others I recommend a book by Steve Slaunwhite. It’s called “The Everything Guide To Writing Copy: From Ads and Press Release to On-Air and Online Promos–All You Need to Create Copy That Sells.” Yep, it’s a ridiculously long title, but a very good book and an excellent place to start. It sells on Amazon for about $17 US for the paperback or about $10 for a Kindle/digital edition.

Mr. Slaunwhite’s book will give you an overview of various ways you can make money as a writer and how to get started. It, and a little courage to put yourself out there, is really all you need.

You will make the most money, and probably enjoy the process more, if you write for people and businesses in your local area. One of the more lucrative writing jobs is writing print ads for local brick and mortar businesses.

Copywriting is an imperfect art. Not even the most seasoned pros write a winner every time. There is a lot of trial and error involved, particularly in sales copy.

Sammi, I hope this helps. I’m always happy to answer your questions if you’d like to know more.

      All the best…

  31. So I’ve been using my “super power” to create contents that resonate with who I am. I’m about 4 months into it. So it’s probably too early to make a good assessment whether this is going to be worth it or not. I am at 50 50. Actually a little more than 50 percent that this will lead me to something unexpected and something very positive in the future.

    • Hi Joon!

Thanks for stopping by. I encourage you to keep using your superpower and to keep building content. I got discouraged after two months and stop adding content to my site. After another two months of coasting, my site made a sale.

That’s when I realized this really works and I re-committed myself to the training and to writing content on a consistent basis.

I’m 58 and I’ve tried a lot of ways to build a business, make money and live independently, and creating an authority website the way Wealthy Affiliate teaches is the best option most people will ever have to earn a comfortable income and live free of the 9 to 5 rat race.

      All the best…

  32. Tyler Redlev says:

Very inspiring post. Writing is a skill that everyone must develop. But that’s my personal opinion of course.
Now we’re living in the digital age where the life of many people are spent in internet. And the good thing is that you can monetize anything if you know how to. Good and very inspiring article.

    • Hi Tyler!

Thanks for taking a moment to comment. I agree, everyone would benefit if they could write.

Isn’t it amazing the power the internet has given people? Indeed, we have something of value to contribute to the world, and like you mentioned, if you know how, you can make money with it.

      All the best…

  33. I really love the title of your page! And you’ve done a great job with putting together a lot of content with images and small paragraphs that make it fairly easy to read. I like that your page is clean and simple and it’s very organized. It’s kinda funny, as I first started reading your page I didn’t realize you were talking about WA. I thought you were talking about another community. The only thing I thought should be changed is the wordpress logo in your browser tab 🙂

    • Hi JCamden!

Thanks for stopping by. I’m pleased you enjoyed the article and were surprised when you realized it was WA. Thanks too for pointing out the wordpress logo. I’ve tried to change that, but some reason it is still appearing on some pages, but not all. Very strange.

      All the best…

  34. ‘What type of superpower would you like to possess?’

I guess you’ll answer ‘To be the best writer in the world’ if someone ask you the question above.

Having said that, it’s true with the points you made up Gary.

I mean, we should be writing with true purposes, Intention. Even emotions. It’s decisive. And important.

Thanks for sharing, my friend. – Tar

  35. Hi Gary, I like the way you introduce your subject. I agree with you when you say that you have to write like you write to a friend. I also agree that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to become a good writer, and Wealthy Affiliate is the best place to learn new skills!

    • Hi Luc!

Thanks for stopping by. I wish more people would realize that they don’t need to spend big money to learn how to earn a comfortable income as a writer. Most writing courses are horrendously expensive. Actually, the rules of good writing are quite simple, but it does take practice to master them. Like you mentioned, the easiest and most affordable way to learn how to make money as a writer is through Wealthy Affiliate.

  36. Hi Gary! Thank you actually put into words what I feel about writing. It contributes to creating context and publish it on the Web is for me a great satisfaction. I never think that I could actually use it to write for others. I prefer definitely expanding my own website with what I write. One thing that I like touch is trust.
Can I ask you about what you think is needed to build trust from my readers?

    • Hi Steen!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate that you took time to comment.

Yes, trust is essential. It’s the most valuable thing on the internet, and the most rare. If we are a trustworthy person and generous, we will naturally create an environment of trust on our website.

However, there are several things we can do to consciously foster trust.

First of all, give tremendous value to your reader. Freely give them something they can use or that helps them in some way. Before you reveal to them a truth they don’t know, reveal a truth that they do know so they will instinctively agree with you.

Only recommend quality products and services on your site, things that will truly help your reader solve their problems or fulfill their desires.

Write with a generous, helping spirit.

And, never betray the trust your reader has in you.

      I hope this helps.

      All the best…

  37. How to Earn a Darn Good Living as a Writer
I loved your article, especially since I too like to write. I also believe in the three cornerstones you mentioned: trust, original content, and integrity. I have 2 websites I am writing content for and the work requires sustained work and patience and Wealthy Affiliate University is no get rich quick scheme. I can vouch for that. It is a wonderful place to learn step-by-step. Thank you for allowing me to comment on your site.
    Edward Mijarez

    • Hi Edward!

Thanks for stopping by. I’m pleased you agree with the three cornerstones I mentioned for making money as a writer: trust, original content and integrity. It’s amazing there is so much deception on the internet that if a writer is simply honest they will be automatically at the head of the pack.

I agree, Wealthy Affiliate is the best place I’ve found for learning how to really make money on the internet, and, hands down, writers have a tremendous advantage.

      All the best…

  38. Hello Gary, you were right! It is not about the degree and the higher you rank and achievements in your life. It is all about what you think you can do more about it. I really love your idea of maximizing every potential of an individual. I got my BS degree from health allied but right now I am a freelancer/affiliate myself. And I got to know my other skills and potential like you said writing is a superpower. Good thinking and more power to you!

    • Hi Jezza!

So good to see you again. Thanks for stopping by. It’s absolutely amazing how much power a writer has if they would only accept it. Plus, the internet multiples this power a million times.

      All the best…

  39. Elizabeth Haran says:

    Hi Gary,
Wow. Powerful presentation and thanks for sharing all those years of $ worth of insight into how to make a darn good living as a writer. As I was parousing your words and letting them flow through me like a long drink of fresh water I have needed for a long time, I got stuck when you started talking about the negative effects of content mills. It’s not that I wouldn’t agree with you if I knew what content mills are, (I guess I’m lucky to never have had to deal with them so far) but if you drop a bomb like Be Ware! you need to let us (or maybe just me) know what to beware of and why. Could you insert a link to a page that tells us all about content mills so that those of us who don’t know anything about it won’t feel so left out of the loop? One of the nicest things about being in a network like WA, we get to take advantage of other people’s knowledge and experience. I think that is or was the purpose of the internet itself, but I think it got side-tracked, anyway that is the first thing I would ask. Just a link to some clarifying info. Much like I should have done with this comment. I think it’s too long. Sorry. I think that the same goes for the rest of your content. I feel like an outsider when you write about your craft because there are so many things you reference that I know little or nothing about. Like, what is copywriting. I mean the full gamut? Another link explaining that would make me feel more welcome to your site. Like you care about what I do and don’t know already. Better let you go. Not sure what the length of these comments is supposed to be. I will definitely be reading your site from now on, and since I too would like to earn a living writing, would love your expert advice on my site as well, writing quality content.
Thanks, Gary. Keep up the good work. Hope my comments helped and talk to you soon, I hope.

    • Hi Beth!

Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment. I really appreciate your insight into how I can make my article more user friendly. I’ll take care of the issues you mentioned today. I’m also looking forward to visiting your website.

      All the best…

  40. Hi Gary,
I’ve been perusing Welfare Affliate Reviews for hours now. Until today I’d never heard of WA. I’ve read a lot of reviews and yours has struck a real chord with me. TRUST, respect and the golden rule are principles I strive to live by everyday. So here I am trusting you by sharing briefly my story. I suffered from post natal depression with my second child 13 years ago. Since then life hasn’t been quite the same. It’s been hard, but this experience has greatly enriched and changed my life for the better. A huge part of my recovery was been through expressing my thoughts and feelings via a personal journal. I now wish to share parts of my writing to help and inspire others in their recovery. This year I have also been expressing my feelings through artwork as well. It is very therapeutic. I am now at the stage where I’m looking for a way to share with others online in an inspirational sense. I am also extremely unhappy in my current job as a secondary teacher. I feel trapped, because I’m not eligible for any government funding to do a course and I can’t afford the expensive fees. My hubby owns his own business, but my job provides about two-thirds of my family’s income. It is also hard to get out of teaching, because it is so time-consuming and doesn’t allow time for much else. The past month I have had a lot of time to think, because I’ve re-ruptured my achilles tendon for the second time. I’ve been told to keep my leg elevated for 2 weeks straight. In this time I have been writing and loving it (more inspirational short pieces based on my journal writing over the years). I’ve just turned 45 and am desperate to make the necessary changes so I can pursue something that I’m passionate about, based on my own personal journey, that can give hope to others. I hear a similar thing in your writing. That you want to share your writing journey to help and inspire others to reach their potential and be the very best they can be.

    • Hi Angela!

I am deeply touched you shared your story with me and I can relate to your situation on so many levels. I appreciate that you value the Golden Rule. It shows you have integrity.

I think that’s the rub. At least it has been for me. In my experience, large organizations like corporations, hospitals, school districts, government agencies and the like are managed by sociopaths. These are people who cannot create anything or accomplish anything by themselves. They can only bully others into getting things done.
This is why these environments are so hostile to people with integrity. People like us.

About depression. That’s a big one for me. I’ve struggled with depression for over 40 years. About 5 years ago, I began to understand it better and created a life that is healthier. This has made a world of difference. For most people, I’m convinced depression is a natural response to the bizarre culture we live in. I have a lot to say about depression and can share more, if you wish.

I applaud your journaling and artwork endeavors. Looks like your true self is demanding to be heard. Clearly you’re on the right track.

I’m sorry to hear you are so unhappy with your current job as a school teacher, but I can relate. I wish I had the power to save you. Unfortunately, I don’t have that power. The good news is; you have the power to save yourself. It will take time, but you obviously have the intelligence and the creativity to build a life you enjoy.

Wealthy Affiliate might be your path to a new life. It has been for me and many other people. You can join for free here, so you can see for yourself if works for you.

  41. I have heard about people earning full time incomes as writers, and especially bloggers. To me, it makes perfect sense to make money online from writing about our passions in life. It beats a job any day 🙂

Copywriting does sound great, but it wouldn’t really be worth it if we had to put in the extra time to find clients and then having to wait around for long periods of time for the money to happen.

Your online writer community recommendation sounds truly amazing, and I will definitely follow it up!

    • Hi Neil!

Thanks for stopping by. Learning to write copy is a valuable skill, but I think the best way to learn is by having your own blog. You can definitely learn how to do this the right way by joining our online community. It takes time to build a profitable blog, but it is worth it on so many levels. For me, one of the most enjoyable aspects of blogging is the pleasure of working for myself on my terms and not getting jerked around by writing clients.

      I appreciate your comment.

      All the best…

  42. Hi Gary,

    Great article!
I was looking at Wealthy Affiliate and wasn’t entirely convinced but after reading your article I have signed up for the free version and will probably move to Premium. It looks like there are a lot of resources and tools available but it look s like the community is the big plus, is this your view?

    • Hi Brendan!

Thanks for stopping by. I’m glad my article steered you in the right direction. Anyone who wants to can build an online business that generates a full-time income. It does take time, but doesn’t every business? And it takes learning some new skills too. Wealthy Affiliate is the only legitimate place I have found that teaches how to build a real online business. It’s a true community of people helping each other succeed. And, like you mentioned, it’s free to join. There’s no risk. You can’t beat that.

      All the best…

  43. Hey Gary,
It is evident through your writing that you care a lot about creating quality content on you blog. I think that the traditional way of earning income through writing by getting your work published is all but dead. That marketplace is not so competitive that it is almost impossible to get published unless you have a true, original idea or concept. You’re right, affiliate marketing is probably the best way for writers to make a good living in today’s market.

    • Hi Alex,

Thanks for stopping by. You have some good points. Fiction writers have never made much money. It’s like so many creative fields, a few superstars make fortunes and the rest scrape by. Sadly, most writers never get published at all.

Copywriting is better, but it takes years to get established. In the same amount of time, a writer can create an authority blog and escape the feast and famine life of most copywriters, plus never have to deal with impossible clients.

      All the best,

  44. Gary, thank you for this well informative post. In the past writing was a nightmare for me. But like you said, if you can write a letter to a friend you can earn money as a writer.
I am not sure if that is a true statement for me, but what I have realized is that the more you read and write, the more you will be open to content that you can share.

Your approach to joining a community that exposes you to writing is essential and having a community as Wealthy Affiliate is one of the best choices anyone can make. I will look more at WA on a serious note as a University for writers, cause to grow my business I need to be writing content regularly to have success.

Thank you for the enlightenment and I appreciate you for posting this article. Wish you all the best in all your endeavors.

    • Hi Bishop,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I’m pleased you enjoyed my post.

I’m sure you’ll enjoy the Wealthy Affiliate community. When I stumbled into it, I felt like I had finally found my online tribe.

      All the best,

I was looking at Wealthy Affiliate and wasn’t entirely convinced but after reading your article I have signed up for the free version and will probably sign up for the premium version as well. It look like there are a lot of tools and resources available and the big plus seems to be the community. Is this your take on this?

    • Hi Italian Brave Heart!

It’s good to see you here. The training in Wealthy Affiliate is very comprehensive. With the skills I’ve learned in Wealthy Affiliate, I’ve built two profitable websites and also built a website for an off-line retail business. The owner of the off-line business is thrilled I can drive internet traffic to his site and boost his revenue. It’s truly amazing what you can do once you learn internet marketing skills.

The Wealthy Affiliate community is wonderful too. When I joined I felt like I had finally come home.

  46. Hi Gary,
You make a compelling case that anyone who can write a letter to a friend has a superpower that can make them money. I need to share your article with all of my friends who want to make extra money, or better yet change careers. Love it. You’ve taken the mystique out of writing content as an affiliate marketer and boiled it down to being a decent human being who is genuine and follows the golden rule. Great points. I’ll be sharing your article.

    • Hi Alyssa,

I’m so glad you enjoyed my article and pleased you want to share it. Too often we believe, and may even be taught, that sales means tricking the customer. That’s only true if the product is junk. Marketing junk is a hard way to make a living. On the other hand, when we have a good product that solves problems or fulfills desires, it is so much easier. Then, all you have to do is find the people who would benefit from the product.

      Thanks for stopping by.

    Hi there,

I can confirm what you write 20 bucks a day in Thailand or the Phillipines is good money. It is 2x the daily salary for a hard days labour.

Source: Living in Thailand for 5 years now.

I would agree that if you can send a friend an email you can earn a living as a writer. I personally thought I would struggle for content when I started my the moment I cant stop writing! I have become a writeaholic!

Great site, keep up the awesome work.

    • Hi Derek,

Thanks for confirming why it is so difficult, if not impossible, for someone in the west to earn a living writing for the content mills.

Communicating is always easier in a casual, friendly tone. It’s all about being friendly, and honest.

Good to hear you’re not struggling for content. Of all the addictions we could possibly have, writing is probably one of the best, particularly if you have an authority website.

      Thanks for stopping by.

      All the best,

  48. How right you are! I never dreamed that I could write stuff that would be interesting and that people would like, but once I got into it, I find myself enjoying it more, I guess it is starting to be sort of an addiction for me.
I enjoyed reading this article, it gave me ideas and thoughts to increase my train of thinking and to improve my writing.

    • Hi Angela,

It’s good to hear from you. Thanks for commenting. I’m so glad you enjoyed my article and found some ideas in the process.

      All the best,

  49. Thanks for the great info, i write a new eBook each week, I will keep this all in mind. This is fruitful from WA. Download info is on my profile at the bottom. Hope things are going well for you.

  50. Well that’s true…my writing skill is a superpower! I’m glad you put it that way because I hadn’t thought of it. Not everyone can do it well, and if you can you’re ahead of the game. Wealthy Affiliate sounds like a great place to get started and get the help I need to learn how to put my superpower to work to make me some cash. 🙂

    • Hi, Shannon!

Thanks for stopping by. We writers tend to discount our superpower, but it really is amazing. The internet has given writers a tremendous advantage and Wealthy Affiliate is the best place I’ve found to cash in as a writer.

The internet has an insatiable appetite for content and writers are never ending goldmines of content. It’s like creating money out of thin air. Wealthy Affiliate will show you how to combine your writing skills with the internet to build an ethical online business. Next to writing novels, writing for my websites is my favorite kind of writing.

      All the best,

  51. Patti B. says:

I came across your site when I search for reviews on AWAI and I have enjoyed your article. I love writing and would like to make a living with my abilities and so I have been searching the internet for more information. I also searched for reviews of Wealthy Affliate and upon further research, I found that the free status is only good for 7 days then to continue receiving help you must upgrade your status. Was wondering if this is true?

    • Hi Patti,

Wealthy Affiliate will show you how to turn your love of writing into a comfortable income. The free membership is absolutely free, no strings attached. You won’t get the one-on-one help of the live chat, but you will still be helped. Also, you will still have your two free websites and access to the first level of training.

The paid membership will dramatically accelerate your online business so you are profitable sooner. It’s affordable and at some point, your online business will more than pay for it.

      I’m here for you,

  52. After reading this article I couldn’t help but feel a little inspired and interested in the community you touch upon throughout the content. I am looking for somewhere to learn my trade but its getting harder and harder to find somewhere legit online. I am a blogger but I could do with a bit of direction – is this community free?

    • Hi, Chris!

      I appreciate your thoughtful comment.

The community I mention is Wealthy Affiliate. The Starter Membership is totally free. You don’t even need a credit card, just sign up and you’re in. The Starter Membership gives you access to most of the community for 7 days, plus level one training and two free websites. This will give you a chance to thoroughly check us out and see if we’re a good fit and if you’re ready to build an online business.

There is a paid membership level too and you’ll know if that is right for you after you’ve joined for free and gotten to know us.

      All the best,

  53. Hi Gary,
I definitely got into blogging and affiliate marketing because of my passion for writing. I was actually considering doing some freelance writing, but now that I’ve read your article, I think I will concentrate on creating content for my blogs at Wealthy Affiliate instead.
Thanks for sharing this and keep up the good work.

    • Hi, Ian!

Yes, I’m convinced you’ll make more money with your writing and enjoy it more if you focus on writing content for a blog. When you write for a blog, you can do it the way you want. Freelance writing often requires jumping through hoops and catering to the egos of others. The business world is full of oversize egos. It’s like a minefield of egos. Some clients will jerk your chain just because they can. You’re way ahead of the game with your own blog, especially the way Wealthy Affiliate teaches.

      All the best,

  54. Hello Gary,
your website has immediately caught my attention because I wonder how I could get to create good content. I am no english native speaker, but I can write letters to friends and family in my own language. So I hope I fulfill the requirements to become an expert in my niche. But I wonder how I can get informed better in my niche, because I would like to have a good blog. I am interested in music production, but it will take some time to get informed because I come from playing an instrument rather than from making electronic music. I thought I could make a news section with my blog, so that interested people are also informed about the current state of music. Cheers,

    • Hi, Fabi!

Thanks for stopping by. You write well. I wish I knew a second language as well as you know English. You might consider getting Grammarly. I use it on everything I write and it has dramatically improved my writing speed as I know it will catch the mistakes.

I think a music can be a good niche. How would you monetize it? Have you checked how many monthly searches a music blog might have? That’s the true test.

      All the best,

Hello, I really like your article, it is really inspiring and the fact that you push out other methods before explaining WA is a really good thing.

I genuinely never considered myself to be a writer until I started using Wealthy Affiliate and blogging every day!

Keep up on the good work 🙂

    • Hi, Cherilyn!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your kind words.

Wealthy Affiliate is the best place to learn how to earn money as a writer. As I’m sure you know, the internet loves content and original content is valuable. A writer has a tremendous advantage with their own website. It’s like creating a never ending stream of money out of thin air.

Incidentally, you have one of the best avatars I’ve ever seen.

      All the best,

  56. Hi Gary

You really have some great advice here. Very friendly, informative and encouraging with a little humour thrown in.

It’s fantastic that you are putting your superpower to good use and encouraging others to follow in your footsteps.

    Love it.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Jill 🙂

  57. Hi Gary,
You definitely know how to ignite people’s interest by using your superpower, no doubt.
It gives me lots of energy to continue working on my website and learning on WealthyAffiliate, which is an amazing place on the internet to grow and communicate.
Thank you for creating an inspirational website.
    Cheers, Jan

  58. What a great post for introducing people to copywriting. You explained clearly and succinctly what the pros and cons are of each and every way of earning through writing from the heart.
I had no idea you would be introducing WA. I am actually a member and you have re-enthused me to carry on with my posts and article writing. I have been with WA since last August and have been writing content since then. It is hard work and with my particular niche, needs much research and accuracy. But the rewards will start to come if you are consistent.
The WA community is a very rare group of like minded people. You can do no better than to join this amazing WA ‘university’ if you want to learn all there is to know about IM and content writing. Great article and thanks for the boost! Ches

    • Hi, Ches!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your kind words. I’ve written copy for three decades and I’m convinced the best opportunity for a writer is to write for their own website.

Like you mentioned, it takes time and effort, and for most people there is a learning curve, but the rewards are phenomenal and unlimited.

I encourage writers to become a student of the internet and Wealthy Affiliate is the place to learn. It is a rare community and I am blessed to be part of it.

      All the best,

  59. This was an incredibly fun read. You got me way hyped for WA.

I don’t like to toot my own horn, but I’m a really good writer, and WA fit me like a glove. I didn’t describe it as a superpower, until reading this.

Writing plays to my strength and I’m having a blast! Even though WA takes time to bear fruit, it’s all worth it in the end.

Exceptional article Gary! Great site too!

    • Hi, Makki!

Thanks for your kind words. I’m pleased you found motivation in my article.

Writing truly is a superpower. With your writing skills and the methods Wealthy Affiliate teaches, you can literally write your own ticket. Yes, building success online takes time, but success takes time in any arena.

Historically, most writers have not been able to support themselves with their writing. The internet changed that. Now, anyone who can write and who is willing to put their butt in a chair on a regular basis to write content, can make a darn good living.

      All the best,

  60. In my longer days writing is something I loved doing. I would sit and put all of my feelings and emotions to paper. However, over the years I seem to have lost my ability to write the way I use to. How do you suggest I get it back? I will love to start writing content for my new blog. When you write for yourself you are able to express exactly what you want conveyed in your message.

    • Hi, Reneea!

      Thanks for stopping by.

On any given day, there are so many demands on our time and attention, I’m not surprised that you’re having difficulty tuning into your inner writing genius. I call it your genius, because that is what it is. How else can you explain creating something out of nothing?

Maturity, responsibilities and fatigue will also diminish our creative impulse. The good news is that your writing genius is still there, waiting for you to make time and space for it.

Great creative minds of every age remind us to protect the sense of play and creativity we knew as a child. That is where our genius lives.

I highly encourage you to keep a notebook handy. Write in it whenever you feel the urge. And, perhaps more importantly, make time to write, if only for an hour a day. Ideally, reserve the same time each day. At first, it might feel like you have nothing to write.

That is only because your writing genius is not sure if it’s safe to come out. It might take a few days of trying during the times you reserve for writing, but eventually, your creative genius will believe you have made time for it. Then it will appear.

It’s okay to be a little selfish. Make your writing a priority and you will be rewarded.

      All the best,

Great post! Just wanted to let you know that you have a great style of writing about you – definitely a superpower! haha And that you are absolutely right! I have had some experience with freelance writing and copywriting and its definitely NOT the way to go. The competition is so high and its so hard to actually find work and make a decent living off of it. Thanks for you recommendations 🙂

    • Hi, Martina!

Thanks for commenting and telling us about your experience as a freelance writer. Thank goodness we have the internet! Now anyone who can write, or who is willing to learn, can have an online business that pays a full-time income if they will just put in the effort and stick with it. Like any business, it takes time, but the rewards are phenomenal.

      All the best,

  62. Hi,

Great post on writing for a living. Like how you go into detail about the ins and outs of copy and blog writing.

The post was easy to read and left me wanting more. You also added enough photos to make the post flow very easy.

Nice touch with the WA program at the end. Are you getting referrals from the WA program?

    • Hi, Tim!

Thanks for stopping by. I’m pleased you enjoyed my post. Yes, I am getting referrals. In my experience, building a blog is the best money making option for someone who enjoys writing.

      All the best,

  63. Interesting article. I do sometimes write copy for others (former journalist) and it is tough bidding against people in India, China etc. It’s also tricky when people want quality but don’t want to pay for it. The same is the case for my IT business – too much outsourcing to India and the like has seen rates plummet (and the quality of work plummet). Sometimes doing work for others is very hard work – and that is just trying to win the work. It’s always best to try and work for yourself.

    • Hi, Evie!

I’m glad you found my article interesting. Bless the journalist of the world. That’s a profession that has gone through tremendous change. Like you mention, it is tough bidding against people living in countries where the average daily wage is about $2. Combine that with the fact most clients don’t want to pay for quality writing and it’s an upward struggle.

I still write copy for a few clients. All of them are local and I have a long standing relationship with them. Plus, my copywriting experience is morphing into local SEO which I learned through Wealthy Affiliate. It’s a great combination.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    Interesting article Mr Horton,

Will wealthy affiliate teach someone how to write, everyone is not a good writer?

How long has wealth affilate been in business, I am just curious if they have been in business a while they must be on the up.

Why does wealthy affiliate offer free training, how do they make any money?

    • Hi!

Thanks for stopping by. You ask a great question.

Yes, Wealthy Affiliate has some terrific writing training. There are several lessons focused on writing content for your website. Here’s an example:

Since the internet has evolved, copywriting has had to evolve too. The old style of manipulative sales copy that many writing courses still teach no longer works. To be persuasive, it is essential to help a prospective customer get what they want.

This is a much softer, friendly and far more pleasant way of writing.

I like to describe this style of writing as talking to your best friend over a cup of coffee. This is the style of writing Wealthy Affiliate teaches. It’s much easier to write this way and far more enjoyable.

Wealthy Affiliate will be 11 years old in September 2016. It’s build on rock solid ethics and proven business principles. You can bet it’s here to stay. Over the years, Wealthy Affiliate has helped a lot of people build successful online businesses.

Anyone who can operate a personal computer can succeed online with the methods taught at Wealthy Affiliate.

You asked about the free training at Wealthy Affiliate. Wealthy Affiliate is an online community of writers, webmasters and internet marketers. We offer a free starter membership which includes most of the benefits of the community for 7 days. This is our way of letting someone check us out without risk, and to see if they are ready to do the work required to succeed online.

It’s not difficult to build a profitable online business, but it does require sustained effort. There is no magic button to online success.

After the 7 day trial, a member can upgrade to the premium membership level to continue the training. The premium membership costs $49 a month or about $29 a month when paid annually.

      Thanks again for stopping by,

  65. Hi Gary, thanks for the great article. I’ve been thinking about taking a copywriting course for a long time actually. So do you think it’s really not worth it? I’m not prepared to pay thousands of dollars though.

I have my own websites and write articles, yet I feel I can never call myself a writer. Perhaps because English is not my mother language, and I also write slow. I can be the most honest and trustworthy in my writing, but somehow I lack the ability to convince others – at least that’s how I feel. How do you think I should train myself? Or do you think it’s just a lack of confidence?

    • Hi, Ray!

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate that you took the time to comment.

I do not recommend spending a lot of money to learn copywriting or any kind of writing. There are plenty of books available that will teach you the basics. From that point, it’s just a matter of applying what you learn. Although, it is a constant learning process. You will learn more from doing than from taking a course.

The internet has changed and continues to change the copywriting world. People’s attention span has shrunk to 8 seconds! 8 Seconds! A goldfish has a longer attention span. This means that traditional copywriting methods such as long sales letters or so-called power words no longer work and that short videos are the future.

Also, relationships and authenticity are priceless online. By this I mean, even if your writing is horrid, if you are authentic and build a relationship with your reader/website visitor, they will get to know you, like you and trust you. Then if you recommend a quality product or service that will help them solve a problem, you will be persuasive and make sales.

Also, consider creating an opt-in and mailing list so you can build a relationship with your website visitors. And, always, always, always seek to help your website visitors solve their problems or fulfill their desires. That speaks louder than sales copy.

To learn more about persuasion, I suggest you read INFLUENCE by Dr. Robert Cialdini. It will open your eyes to how to influence others and how you are influenced too. A good book about writing copy is THE EVERYTHING GUIDE TO COPYWRITING by Steve Slaunwhite. Slaunwhite also has a good book on how to create a copywriting business, although it is a little dated it still has some good info.

Other than that, I encourage you to be a student of the internet and of copywriting as the fields are continually evolving. Read all you can and apply what you learn to your web business.

Keep in mind that self-doubt and lack of confidence is part of any creative pursuit. It’s the result of our inner critic who drives us to perform at our best. Don’t take it seriously

      All the best,

  66. I appreciate, cause I found just what I was looking for. You have ended my 4 day long hunt! God Bless you man. Have a nice day. Bye
