How to Make Money as a Writer.

The writer’s life promises freedom and riches, but like most things, reality is a bit different. Can you make money as a writer? Yes. Can you make a lot of money? Absolutely. Never before in the history of the world have writers been so valuable.

It all comes down to how much time you’re willing to invest.

find your writing nicheYou can make fast easy money or, if you’re patient and willing to invest some time, you can make a lot more and truly enjoy personal freedom too. The Internet has an insatiable appetite for content, web content, email content, sales letters and more. The opportunities for writers are endless and the earning potential is truly unlimited.

Unless you want to work for an employer, you don’t need a college degree or credentials to be a writer. You either can write or you can’t. If you enjoy writing, you have what it takes. While you don’t need credentials, proper training will save you a lot of heartache and vastly increase your income, but you don’t need to go to college. In a moment, I’ll show you where to get training for free.

In this article, I’ll cover the pros and cons of a few categories of writing for money I have experience with. I’ll start with the quickest and easiest ways to make money as a writer and end with what I believe is the most rewarding and easiest to get into.

A Quick Way to Make Money as a Writer.

Business owners need you. Visit local businesses and introduce yourself as a copywriter. If you’re just starting out, be honest about it. Above all, be honest. You want to build a relationship with your clients. Relationships are built on trust and trust is built on integrity. Err on the side of honesty.

Because you’re just starting out, you’ll have to negotiate what you will be paid. Be sure to get this in writing so there is no misunderstanding later. Until you build up a body of work, you may have to keep your rates low. Also, ask the client for examples of writing they like and use these examples as a template.

A website telling about you and presenting samples of your work is essential. Anything you’ve written will serve as a sample of your work when you’re starting. Later, you can add relevant work samples. It’s important to have a website. A website proves you’re not a fly-by-night con. You can get a free website here.

When you have enough clients to keep you busy, begin gradually increasing your rates.

Some of the drawbacks to keep in mind with this method is that it’s dependent on continually marketing yourself. Once a project is complete you’ll have to find another one. This can take a lot of time and energy. Also, some writers would rather not have to meet people face to face. There’s no residual income with this method either, unless you negotiate a retainer.

Another Quick Way to Earn Money as a Writer.

Creative superheroThis might seem like a no-brainer, but I wanted to mention it. If you sign up for Freelancer.com, Odesk.com or Mturk.com you can be making money within hours. Unfortunately, it won’t be much money, certainly not enough to live on.

These kinds of places are content mills and require writers to bid against one another for a job. This keeps downward pressure on what you can earn. Still, if you need money fast, this is a way to do it.

If you build your own website and write content for yourself, you’ll earn a lot more. I cover this option at the bottom of the page.

Making Money as a Novelist.

Stories are probably the most powerful form of a writing, but writing a novel is hard work and it takes a long time. It takes a long time to be competent and a long time to earn respectable money at it. Still, if you have a passion for writing long fiction, there’s nothing like creating worlds from your imagination.

If you want to write novels, don’t do it for the money. Find your own reason and accept that it can be a long journey.

Study the genre that interests you and read everything on the craft you can find. Master the structure of the novel first and then move on to mastering scenes, dialogue and description. When you have a solid draft, hire the best editor you can afford. A good editor will challenge you to write your best and take your fiction to heights you will never imagine on your own.

If you have a knack for writing stories, this talent will serve you well as a blogger and in writing sales letters. I cover both below.

How to Make Big Money as a Writer

One of the most lucrative forms of writing is direct response copywriting. This is the craft of writing persuasive sales letters. A single direct response sales letter can earn a business millions of dollars. In comparison, a direct response copywriter makes from $4,000 to $15,000 per project and often earns a percentage of all sales as residual income.

It took me a month to write my first sales letter, but more experienced copywriters can finish a project in a week. There are some similarities between writing novels and writing sales letters. The use of story can be very persuasive. Writing direct response copy is not something you just pickup. There’s a well-established science to writing effective sales copy and it requires some specific training that can costs thousands of dollars. Plus, businesses are slow to risk such valuable projects on unknowns. It may take years to get established.

Blogging for Money.

A properly trained blogger can earn unlimited income and enjoy unparalleled freedom. As a blogger, you can write about topics you enjoy. You have full control. There are no deadlines and no clients to chase after. You don’t even need to leave home. You can do it all from your computer.

Little superhero with his motherTake this website for example. When someone searches the internet for the things I write about, they find my site. Sometimes the information I’ve written contains a link to a product sold online. If someone clicks that link and buys, I make some money. It’s simple affiliate marketing combined with writing.

Online shoppers love to read information before they buy. In fact, they need that information to feel confident they are buying the right stuff. As a writer, you have a tremendous advantage with affiliate marketing.

There are 2 Billion people with high speed connections to the internet and the number is rapidly increasing. At any given moment, millions are searching the internet for information. Information you, as a website owner and blogger, can give them. In the process you make money. In fact, you can make a lot of money.

Hello, Gary. Great website! I especially love this page. I’m a published writer of one short story. I’m writing an LGBTH book of stories right now. (That H is for hetero, by the way.) I’m also working on a book of short horror stories. Since I signed up for Wealthy Affiliates in late March 2015 (just days ago), I have created about half of my first website! I’m finally on my way to making some money from my writing online. I wish you all the best with your website, Gary!
